Your president says…
We had a wonderful evening
at Living Spirit UMC for the
annual meeting Oct. 28. We
had a special barbecue
dinner made by the legendary
cooks of Oakland —
now contributing their magic
for Living Spirit. The food
and hospitality just kept
flowing from the kitchen.
Rev. Donna Dempewolf
welcomed us. She and Brent
Holmberg gave us an update
on the merger of Oakland
and Asbury, supported in
part by a loan from Metro
West Builders and Minnesota
East Builders. Brent
said a congregation that was
mostly progressive and
another that was mostly
conservative, one that was
mostly multi-cultural and the
other primarily Caucasian,
have been building the new
Living Spirit congregation.
One of their important
ministries is to reach out to
the community with a free
Wednesday meal and a
breakfast on Sunday
morning. This has been an
important way to welcome
and embrace the community.
Will Parker, once a
member of Oakland and now
worshipping with Living
Spirit, gave an inspiring
message about the growth of
his faith as he served as a
liturgist, sang with a “bunch
of 10 guys” and had breakfast
on Saturdays with
church members. This
fellowship is now reaching
new people.
It was gratifying to see
that the Metro West Builders,
which has been serving
congregations in the metro
west Twin Cities for more
than 120 years, continues to
help congregations thrive and
grow in spiritual vitality.
Thanks to all of you and your
churches for your continuing
faithful support of the work of
the Builders.
Thanks are also due to
members who are leaving the
board. Secretary Anita
Thompson resigned because
of family demands. Vice
President Peter Beck and Bob
Bertelsen both completed their
terms and rotated off, and Tom
Biatek was assigned to serve a
church in Albert Lea. We are
grateful for their leadership and
commitment. For those who
have agreed to continue to serve
on the board and on our
committees, your faithfulness
and volunteerism are much
appreciated. Kevin Schill has
graciously continued to serve us
while we search for a new field
director.
