Metro West United Methodist Builders
Partners in Creating Sacred Space

Your president says…

We had a wonderful evening
at Living Spirit UMC for the
annual meeting Oct. 28. We
had a special barbecue
dinner made by the legendary
cooks of Oakland —
now contributing their magic
for Living Spirit. The food
and hospitality just kept
flowing from the kitchen.
Rev. Donna Dempewolf
welcomed us. She and Brent
Holmberg gave us an update
on the merger of Oakland
and Asbury, supported in
part by a loan from Metro
West Builders and Minnesota
East Builders. Brent
said a congregation that was
mostly progressive and
another that was mostly
conservative, one that was
mostly multi-cultural and the
other primarily Caucasian,
have been building the new
Living Spirit congregation.
One of their important
ministries is to reach out to
the community with a free
Wednesday meal and a
breakfast on Sunday
morning. This has been an
important way to welcome
and embrace the community.
Will Parker, once a
member of Oakland and now
worshipping with Living
Spirit, gave an inspiring
message about the growth of
his faith as he served as a
liturgist, sang with a “bunch
of 10 guys” and had breakfast
on Saturdays with
church members. This
fellowship is now reaching
new people.
It was gratifying to see
that the Metro West Builders,
which has been serving
congregations in the metro
west Twin Cities for more
than 120 years, continues to
help congregations thrive and
grow in spiritual vitality.
Thanks to all of you and your
churches for your continuing
faithful support of the work of
the Builders.
Thanks are also due to
members who are leaving the
board. Secretary Anita
Thompson resigned because
of family demands. Vice
President Peter Beck and Bob
Bertelsen both completed their
terms and rotated off, and Tom
Biatek was assigned to serve a
church in Albert Lea. We are
grateful for their leadership and
commitment. For those who
have agreed to continue to serve
on the board and on our
committees, your faithfulness
and volunteerism are much
appreciated. Kevin Schill has
graciously continued to serve us
while we search for a new field
director.

The board of the Metro West Builders had a fruitful strategic and business planning session on September 24th.  Field Director, Pat Hinker, brought a wealth of information that day from the visits with 42 of the churches on the west side of the Twin Cities.

Pat found that only about a quarter of the churches she visited were well informed about the Builders.  Thought most churches had received a loan from the Builders or had been the subject of a spring or fall grant/call at some point in our long history, leadership in our churches changes frequently, and those who know us often move to other positions.  It was a good reminder about how important it is for us to reach out on a regular basis to let churches know we are here to address some of their needs.  We also must remind church members that they can connect with other churches by supporting our work.  Connectionalism is alive through the work of the Builders!

Pat talked to senior pastors about what ministries their congregations are embracing.  Neighborhood outreach and age-specific ministries topped the list, with social justice ministries and global missions next in importance.  When asked about challenges facing them, congregations put finances and building needs at the top of the list.  We know that the Builders can aid congregations in providing low interest rate loans and raising money for special building projects through our twice annual grants/calls.  When the Builders provide financial support, it frees up money in the churches for other programming.  You make all our work possible through your support.  Thank you for all you do and for being open to new possibilities.
